Alice Bonham is a seventeen year old girl living a less than stellar life in Minneapolis, MN. Each day she listlessly performs the same routine of school, home, and the occasion social torture session with her friend Jane. In one night her listless life takes a turn for the adventurous, mysterious, and dangerous when Jack saves her from a gang of creeps. Alice becomes engrossed in all things Jack. She feels an innate need to know and understand all the mysteries that is Jack. Jack is just as preoccupied with Alice. She becomes his addiction. As Jack and Alice’s relationship develops, things become way more complicated than either of them could have ever anticipated. When Alice meets Jack’s brother Peter, she feels a carnal attraction, but Peter seems to care less about Alice’s existence. What to do, what to do…
My Blood Approves is a well-written captivating novel. Ms. Hocking has written a new twist on the vampire mythology. It is both refreshing and intriguing. I became absorbed into Alice and Jack’s world, and I enjoyed every minute of it. There are a few editing and grammatical errors, but if you can look past all of that, the errors do not impede the storyline.
The author’s explanation of vampirism is fantastic. She proposes that vampirism is a virus, and while that concept is not novel, she explains that it is an evolutionary occurrence. Ms. Hocking’s vampires are not villains and they are not romanticized. The vampires in this novel are people. They are everyday people…they are everyday people with superhuman strength and extraordinary healing abilities.
My Blood Approves is a well-written, well-developed novel. While it seems to be written for a younger audience, I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys romance, a little bit of mystery, and new points of view on the vampire mythology. Amanda Hocking is a great writer, and I hope for, and look forward to, a sequel (or two…or three).
