Excerpt:

The gut-punch of lust hit first, followed by a familiar embarrassment when I recognized him. I found myself looking into the face of the same guy who had helped carry me down the mountain just a few weeks earlier. Oh shit…

I gawked, red-faced, and what must have been an hour passed as I tried to find the composure to get myself out of the room before I passed out. Beth came to my rescue.

“Daniel, honey, are you okay? You look like you just saw a ghost. Why don’t you come with me and I’ll get you back to your room.” She took me by the good hand and led me out of the room, fussing as we went. “I was afraid we’d push you too far today. I warned you.” Bless her ever-loving heart. I was able to nod an embarrassed look at the three men before escaping.

When I got back to my room, I immediately began packing. Yes, I was a coward, and yes, this coward was hightailing it out of here before I had to face that beautiful man and my utter humiliation again. I’d just turned to grab the last of my clothes when I heard a knock at the door.

“Daniel, honey, can we come in?” Shit, shit, shit! There was no way out. I owed Beth more than running away anyway.

“Yes, just give me a minute.” I closed the drawers and my bag and stuffed it back under the bed. “Okay, come on in.”

Beth came in first, followed closely by my very, very handsome rescuer. “Daniel, this is my nephew, Joseph. I see the two of you have met before. Had I known you’d remembered him, I would never have surprised you like that. I’m beyond apologetic. Now, Joseph, you have something to share?”

He cleared his throat. “Yes, um… Yes, I do.” He looked at me, and I saw concern etched across his face. “I know it’s a bit awkward to meet people who rescued you, but you were hurt so bad when we last met that I had no idea you’d remember me. Had I known, like my Aunt B, I’d have never put you in this position. I’m very sorry for the shock.”

Two sets of eyes landed on me, and I was left with nothing to do other than sit down on the bed and let them both off the hook. It didn’t hurt that both of them looked genuinely concerned.

“I… I also apologize for my rude behavior with you and your friends. They must think I’m a total idiot.”

“No,” Joseph assured me. “At the moment, the only person they think is an idiot is me.”

“A feeling shared among many at the moment,” Beth added.
With a sideways glance at his aunt, Joseph added, “If you prefer, I’ll be happy to stay somewhere else. I don’t want to make you uncomfortable.”

Uncomfortable. The fact that the man melted me with one look like a stick of butter in a hot frying pan is what made me uncomfortable. Add to it that while he was hauling my lame ass down a mountain, I was making googly eyes at him. That wasn’t uncomfortable. That was downright bury me under a toadstool unbearable.

Despite that, I heard myself say, “Oh. No, no, don’t be silly, I’m just embarrassed that I had to be toted down a mountain like a disobedient child. That’s my own stupid pride and I will put that where it belongs. If anyone is going to leave, that would be me.”

“The hell you will,” Beth stepped up. “I’ll not hear any more of that nonsense, young man. You are paid up and you’ll be staying right here, even if I have to call your brother and get him here to help me tie you down.”

With that, the ice was broken and all three of us broke into a laugh.
