Beneath the rivers of mortality, a race of immortals have lived in secret for centuries, humanity's silent defence against the blood hungry vampires who prey on them. But the age of secrecy is coming to an end, thanks to the vengeful schemes of one vampire...

Sebastian, the most powerful immortal in Italy, has not laughed in more than five hundred years. Not since the only woman he ever loved was stolen by the claws of death right in his home of Florence. Now, his only consolation is to hunt the vampire who killed her. And to hold close a curious medallion which holds within its silver heart the makings of a mystery he has never been able to solve.

Effie is lost. Cast adrift by her parents' death a year ago, Effie doesn't know what she lives for. When her enigmatic employer offers her a journey to Florence to open an art gallery with him, she jumps at the chance of a new purpose. Florence has always had a special place in her dreams. But Florence is much more than she expected. The streets call to her, whispering in memories she can't quite grasp. And one man, whose face is hauntingly familiar, promises to give her the answers she craves.

Will Effie trust him? Or will she forever be haunted by secrets that defy the passing of time?

The next must read for fans of Elizabeth Hunter, Ilona Andrews and Karen Chance.

It has been five hundred years since Sebastian an immortal lost the love of his life Effie. Injured and unable to save her he watched as she was dragged out of their home by vampire Bartholemew and a bunch of men. By the time Sebastian was healed and able to go after Effie all he found was her burned body. If it wasn’t for his friend Henry, he would have joined her and for the next five hundred he grieved and searched for the vampire that killed Effie and him because he stopped living when she did, only his body kept going.

While in Florence, Italy Sebastian saw Effie sitting at a table and although it was not possible, he was convinced that she had come back and was reincarnated. When he approached her and called her Effie she replied since that was truly her name and everything about her was the Effie he remembered and lost. Sebastian with Henry’s help knew that he couldn’t just expect her to remember her past and he had to be patient and approach her carefully, something that was totally out of character for him.

Effie is in Florence working on an art exhibit and when Sebastian realizes who her boss is he has no doubt that it is Bartholemew and Effie is in danger. She is ignorant of the fact that her boss is a vampire and the exhibit he is sponsoring is for the purpose of revealing the existence of immortals and vampires. Sebastian has no choice but explain everything to Effie and hope she will believe him. Once an immortal she has proven that immortals can be reincarnated and he is determined to make her an immortal again.

With help from Henry and other immortal friends the search is on for Bartholomew and why he wants Effie. Effie does trust what she is told because everything they say coincides with dreams she has always had. While Effie comes to terms with who she is Sonja a very powerful member of the Immortal Council has something else in her mind. For hundreds of years the medallion, Sebastian has been in possession of is what Bartholomew wants and Effie is his way to get it.

This book had everything I could want from a paranormal romance, secrets, lies, vampires, immortals, wonderful characters, romance, a romance that lasted for five hundred years and betrayals. I couldn’t put the book down and I can’t wait for what comes next for Sebastian and Effie because this was just the beginning.
