A spunky private investigator faces off against a corrupt government when she’s framed for murder and forced to run to New York City, where her own secrets might just get her killed.

Yesterday I made a terrible mistake. I trusted the wrong people for the right reasons. Now my mentor’s dead and I’m a wanted felon, running to the one place I can’t go—New York City.

I have secrets there I've never told anyone.

The only way out of this mess is to infiltrate the most infamous prison in the world and rescue a wealthy Elemental. Easy-peasy, right?

There’s just one problem. I’ve partnered up with Gabriel Vanguard, and the longer we work together, the harder it is to keep my past hidden.

New York is heating up. I just hope we don’t burn it down.

Betrayed By Blood is my first book from L.A. McGinnis and I’m interested to see how the series progresses from here.

Miranda “Andy” McHale is an Elemental, person with magical abilities which became possible after The Surge, a catastrophic event that left a third of the population changed forever. Of course, humanity doesn’t cope well when it feels threatened and so these people are generally treated as lesser than or criminals the higher their ability is. Andy is an unregistered and has also been living a very different life to the one she was raised in. Events lead her down a dangerous path that leaves bodies in its wake and uncovers secrecy, nefarious plots and betrayal

There’s definitely some interesting characters that we meet along the way, from the dark underbelly of the criminal world to the upper class who consider themselves better than everyone else. Specifically, Andy is dragged along on a grand plan by Gabriel, Dawson and Harry. They have a lot to do in order to save a lot of people but all is also not well just within their little rag tag group.

Andy is an interesting character as there are clearly secrets that she’s keeping from everyone from the start, even her closest friend, Lincoln. I got the impression, the more I read of her, that she mostly stumbles through life, generally causing chaos, though not on purpose. She bounces from one incident to the next with them escalating in severity and causing trouble for herself and those close to her. Within these incidents, information that is uncovered is shockingly awful and leaves both the characters and reader wondering at the lengths people will go to when money is involved.

The story becomes really quite intense for her with so much going on in the space of a few days and I really felt for her, especially with how her past rears its ugly head and things are left on quite the cliff hanger. It’s got me eager to read the next book to see how things play out with certain characters and how the overall plot develops.
A recommended read for those who enjoy an urban fantasy with magical elements. There is a hint of romance but it’s not the main focus of this story.
