Paul Bastion is a Chicago police officer who, along with his partner Sean, are the lead detectives in the trial for Antonio Vargas, a major drug dealer. Since threats were made, it was decided that Sean and Paul should disappear until the trial begins, but a family situation would bring Paul back home.

Paul’s Uncle Al had a heart attack and had to have open heart surgery. Al was like a father to Paul and Paul immediately called his cousin Lissa to come to Chicago. Neither Paul or Lissa could imagine what would happen, but on their way to dinner they were both kidnapped. Lissa was beaten near death with Paul watching, and then he was taken. The police department had until Vargas’ trial to release him or Paul would die.

Lissa is found and her injuries are life threatening, so now she is in the same hospital as her father while Paul’s whereabouts are unknown. Nancy, Paul’s mom, is close to the family and she now has her son, her ex-brother-in-law and her niece all in trouble. Lissa’s husband Jackson is deployed in Afghanistan and will be unable to return to Chicago because of his father-in-law’s heart attack, but will an exception be made when it is discovered that his wife is in ICU and suffering from many injuries?

Paul’s department becomes aware of the fact that there is a leak. The investigation is turned over to another department. Hours are ticking by and Paul has to be found before he is killed. The investigation is filled with secrets, surprises, and danger especially to Paul and his family. I don’t want to go into too much detail about the investigation because there is a risk of giving away spoilers and when it comes to a suspense story you have to read everything for yourself.

This was a very interesting book and it was filled with suspense, betrayal, surprises and wonderful characters and I highly recommend it.
