While hosting out-of-town guests at her Georgia home, Dreamwalker Baxley Powell is called upon to help investigate a suspicious fire. One of her guests, close friend and fellow dreamwalker Deputy Sam Mayes, accompanies her to the scene. A meth cook is dead, and when Baxley visits her beyond the Veil of Life, she determines that the woman was murdered. Baxley pities Mandy Patterson, a single mother with aspirations for her teenage son Doodle. Unconcerned about the death of a criminal, the authorities pursue the drug-supply chain angle. Baxley worries about Doodle and vows to find out who killed his mother. As the case grows more baffling, Baxley struggles against her attraction to Sam. Although her husband is missing and declared dead, she does not feel free to love again until she is sure of his fate. Two suspects have the strongest motive, but Baxley has reason to believe they are pawns in a deeper game. And unless she can stop them, the world will never be the same. Book 5 in the Dreamwalker Mystery series.

Baxley Powell is the county Dreamwalker and the only official Dreamwalker in Georgia. When it became too much for her father she took over his duties. She consults with the sheriff and is planning a weekend with her new friend and fellow Dreamwalker Sam Mayes. Sam is a Cherokee Indian who has strong feelings for Baxley feelings she does not feel free to return since her husband’s whereabouts are still unknown.

When a fire reveals a meth lab Baxley is called in to assist in finding out what happened and Sam agrees to help. It seems that single mother Mandy Patterson has been operating a meth lab even though she has a sixteen year old son living with her. It is not a surprise when a meth lab blows up only Baxley Dreamwalks and sees Mandy realizing that there is more going on than meets the eye. Although finding who she made the drugs for and where she sold them is the priority of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation she feels that Mandy’s life was more important and is determined to find out what really happened.

When Baxley begins to have pain in her foot with no obvious cause as to why questions arise as to who or what could be responsible. She had a client Cipriona Marsden a palm reader asking for help on behalf of her grandmother and after her Dreamwalk Cipriona disappeared and did not return Baxley’s calls. Could the palm reader be jealous of Baxley and could she be behind what is happening to her?

Baxley is also keeping a secret from Sam and her family, she has a Watcher who appears when she is in trouble, who this Watcher is I will not reveal in this review. There are secrets, betrayals, lies and surprises and the truth behind Mandy and what happened is revealed. There is no cliffhanger and all questions are answered.

The relationship between Baxley and Sam is one that needs to be finalized but it would all depend on what happened to Baxley’s husband and it was something that kept me interested till the end.
