Beautiful Mackinac Island is the ideal vacation spot. Lovely weather, lots to see and do around the island, the historic hotel, and the surrounding lakes. What you don’t expect to see around the island, the ferries, the bridges and tourist areas are rats. But rats are what visitors are seeing and they aren’t normal ones. What is going on?
And who is going to survive the rat invasion?
This is about the only preview I can give of Rick McQuiston’s horror novella, Eat the World. It’s about what happens to the tourists visiting the Mackinac Island area and how the rats start eating people.
The story goes fast. More a narration of events, rather than development of characters, the story follows a daughter with a sick mother, a family of mom, dad, and 9 year old precocious son, a newlywed couple, and brothers bicycling. In this plot-driven tale, the characters are there to have things happen to them.
And what happens is…horror. Rats. Lots and lots of rats. With something slimy on them, driving them to attack and kill people. And those rats are changing.
I read this right before bed and had to find something else to read lest I have nightmares about giant rats with slime.
If you like horror, if you like being scared, this book is right up your alley. If you’re afraid of rats, or don’t particularly like horror, it’s one to skip because it is very well done and will give you images you’ll have trouble getting rid of.
Rats. Ewwww. Shiver.
