When we left off in book two, Emma had returned to Canada with her husband, Haywood, and their two daughters, Mandy and Beth. Although happy to be reunited with her family, Emma can’t get Arthur out of her mind. Emma is visited by some of her friends informing her Jeannie, who was pregnant when she left, is in trouble and needs her healing abilities. She is ready to help, but when she is told that Arthur is being held prisoner by his enemy, Alexei, a man who blames him for the death of his wife, she knows that staying is not even a question. It was Arthur who created the mists in his feeble attempt to stop wars and ending suffering.

When Haywood tells her that if she leaves she will not be welcomed back, and he knows she is leaving because of Arthur, she doesn’t argue with him but just leaves. She leaves behind a husband and two daughters not knowing if she will ever be able to see them again, but Jeannie and Arthur need her.

The people of Earth are still fighting to stay alive, fighting against those that the mists turned mad and fighting against the mists themselves. Arthur is the answer to ridding the world of the mists once and for all, but if Alexei kills him, all will be lost. Using her gift of healing, Emma is able to save Jeannie. Now with her friends at her side, they set off to rescue Arthur.

Emma’s dreams are filled with images of Alexei who has the ability to insert himself into them. She witnesses Arthur’s torture, and what is left of the man she loves. Alexei makes a deal with her: give herself to him and he will release Arthur. Of course, Arthur is barely a human being, his eye is nearly gone, his skin peels off when it is touched, half his face is burned, and he is missing one of his hands. With Arthur more dead than alive, Emma gives in to Alexei’s demand hoping that with some help from her friends, who also have psychic abilities, she will be able to once again escape and save Arthur.

When reunited with Arthur, she finds her healing ability not working. Now alone and with a man who may only have days or hours to live, she realizes that she has left her husband and daughters only to find herself lonely and afraid. Arthur demands all her attention. Will he survive? Will her abilities return? Will Alexei hunt them down again? And, of course, what about the mists?

This story is a cliffhanger like the others; regardless it is a very engrossing tale. The author does a great job of bringing the reader up to date which helps enormously, especially with someone like me who reads a book a day.
