The heat is growing from the inside, but danger is building on the outside.

Judge Andrew Phillips runs a tight ship in his courtroom. He’s tough, and when he hands down a sentence, he expects to be obeyed. So when a fugitive named Harper escapes and threatens his life, Andrew isn’t keen on twenty-four/seven protection… especially not from Deputy Clay Brown. They have a past, one that could cause problems in their careers.

But with Clay assigned to Andrew and the two of them together every minute, there’s nowhere to hide from their attraction—or from the fact that there’s much more than chemistry blooming between them. As the threat intensifies, Clay knows he’ll do anything it takes to protect the people who are taking their places in his heart: Andrew and his young niece and nephew.

Deputy Clay Brown has been assigned to protect Judge Andrew Phillips a man he does not like. Harper Grange was being transferred to court to appear before Judge Phillips when he escaped and rather than leave town he has made it is main purpose to get to Andrew and kill him and that is where Clay comes in. Clay and Harper are cousins but that has nothing to do with it because Clay knows just how psychotic he is and is ready, willing and able to do whatever is necessary to protect the judge.

Judge Andrew Phillips does not care much for Clay since both men are strong willed and take their jobs very seriously but in spite of that he can’t understand how a man he dislikes could physically ring all his bells. This protection job is a 24/7 job meaning that not only will Clay and Andrew be together during the day but they will also be spending their nights together. It doesn’t take long before the two men realize that first impressions are not really trustworthy since they see each other in an entirely different light now that they are forced together.

In order to secure the Judge, Clay decides that staying in his home would be the safest alternative since Harper would not expect it and for the first time he sees the confident and cocky judge afraid and having to deal with his life upside down. Andrew’s life is always in order and now that his life is in disorder he is having a tough time dealing with it. Making matters worse he gets a call that his sister has been hospitalized after attempting suicide and he has to  now assume responsibility for his seven year old niece and four year old nephew which puts them in danger as well as him.

Clay now has to protect Andrew and the two children who he has come to care deeply for. While hiding and trying to give the children as normal a life as possible Andrew and Clay begin to have feelings for each other. Harper is out there and his constant text messages to Andrew indicate that he has no intention of moving on till he has revenge on Andrew the judge who sentenced him to prison and the judge who is also keeping an additional secret as to why Harper may be after him.

Clay knows that Harper’s parents are in contact with him but he has no idea how much contact and how involved they truly are.

This was a wonderful book because of the characters, Clay and Andrew are wonderful but the two children and Clay’s little dog Petey steal the show.
