A 2016 Riptide Holiday Charity Novel

Carter Embree has always hoped to be rescued from his productive, tragically boring, and (slightly) ethically compromised life. But when an urchin at a grocery store shoves a bundle of fluff into his hands, Carter goes from rescuee to rescuer—and he needs a little help.

Sandy Corrigan, the vet tech who helps ease Carter into the world of dog ownership, first assumes that Carter is a crazy-pants client who just needs to relax. But as Sandy gets a glimpse into the funny, kind, sexy man under Carter’s mild-mannered exterior, he sees that with a little care and feeding, Carter might be Super-Pet Owner—and decent boyfriend material to boot.

But Carter needs to see himself as a hero first. As he says good-bye to his pristine house and hello to carpet treatments and dog walkers, he finds that there really is more to himself than a researching drudge without a backbone. A Carter Embree can rate a Sandy Corrigan. He can be supportive, he can be a hero, he can be a man who stands up for his principles!

He can be the owner of a small dog.

I am so happy to have read this book. Yes it is a holiday book and yes it is so adorably cute, and happy, it even has a puppy! I have to check the cover again and make sure that it is an Amy Lane novel.  Seriously!  A book I need no tissues for or no alcohol? What is that old saying ‘When she is good she is very very good and when she is bad she is horrid?’ If you have read Amy, you know what I mean.

Carter Embree is a lawyer, working under a senior attorney. He hates his job. His boss  has no ethics and Carter does all this man’s research and is very good at it. On one pretty day, Carter is stopped outside of a supermarket. A fluffy tiny puppy is thrust into his hand by a young boy who stops him saying ‘Hey Mister!’ That’s all it took, fate.

Carter, needing all the help he can get, is living solo with not even a gold fish. This is where he makes the best decision of his life. He goes to the local Pets Smart for help and guidance.

Here he meets vet tech Sandy Corrigan, who at first sight has sized Carter up as an uptight crazy man, only to find that Mr. Crazy is different underneath all his shyness. He joins Sandy, taking over the care and feeding of Carter and his puppy along with poop, training pads, Lysol and rug cleaner.

With a little help of having something to take care of and being responsible for something, the real Carter changes. With some nudges from Sandy, who will tell you he knew it from the beginning, Carter finds himself to be the hero of his story and finding out he is not the underdog, he is top dog. Charming story, Amy Lane.
