Once again we get to go back to visit Foster and Javi and their dairy farm. We met them in book one of the series along with Foster’s mother Harriet and his grandmother Katie and it is wonderful to meet up with them again since they are the kind of characters you can’t forget or help love.

Lachlan Buttar is a few weeks short of eighteen and the lose of his mother to cancer has forced him to be on his own. He was taken in by Reverend and his family but when he was put on display in front of the whole congregation asking if anyone was willing to take him in he chose to take off on foot to head to Grand Rapids. With shoes that were two small and killing his feet and a sudden downpour Lachlan found himself at Foster and Javi’s dairy farm being helped by Katie. He had no idea that this dairy farm would become the answer to his dreams.

Abe Armitage works on the farm and is instantly taken with Lachlan who was offered work and a place to stay. Abe knew the kind of people that ran the farm since they had taken him in and offered him work when things between him and his father had gotten very bad. The death of his mother contributed to the decay of his relationship with his father who decided that their small farm would go to his older brother and that Abe should work there for free. Of course the fact that Abe was also gay did not help the situation.

Foster and Javi get Lachlan back to school so he can graduate and help him pursue his dream of college. Lachlan wants nothing more than a family and home but he keeps waiting for something to happen to change everything. He is welcomed into the family but he always has the fear that it won’t last.

Abe and Lachlan both want something more, they want family, they want a future and they start to want each other. The big problem is that with Lachlan going away to college Abe is convinced that the future he dreams of having with him will end when Lachlan gets a taste of the big world outside and meets other men with more of a future. Both men come with baggage and Lachlan also comes with something more. He saw the Reverend’s son Eddie drugging and molesting a young girl when he was living with them and now he is ready to put an end to it. He will do whatever he has to to ensure no other girls are hurt.

Once again Mr. Grey does an amazing job of bringing the reader into the lives of the people he is writing about. This is not a book where we watch as young gay men are abused or families disown them but a book about men accepting who they are and are trying to fulfill their dreams. The characters in this series so far are the kind you would like to have in your own life because they care and are loving and we could all use some of that.

My best friends granddaughter came out as gay and fortunately she was not disowned by her family even though they weren’t going to throw a party for her but I read her messages on facebook and one of them really said it all “take me as I am or watch me as I go”. That is a statement that I hope every gay person out there can take to heart because being gay does not define you.
