Harper Kidd is a highly respected marine archaeologist. Yet, with the economy in a slump, he’s trapped working in an oil company’s exploration division. Now, at the ripe age of thirty, Harp is disgusted with his employer’s damage to the undersea world he loves, tired of his ATM-card-filching ex, and tormented by beautiful dreams of an undersea lover. It’s time for a change and when his best friend, Stick, pleads with him to assist on a deep-sea dig in the Mediterranean, he jumps at the chance.

Harper’s spirits are high when they discover the ruins of an ancient civilization, and soar to the heavens when they discover a statue of an ancient pelora, a mysterious hybrid creature said to mediate between the worlds of reality and fantasy—and the very lover who holds the starring role in his dreams.

When the crew discovers the site is teeming with unexploded ordnance from the conflicts in the Middle East, and the excavation turns deadly, Harper must choose between saving his best friend and saving the pelora he’s fallen in love with.

Harper Kidd dreamed of ancient ruins beneath the sea and spent ten years in college in pursuit of his dream with a master’s degree in oceanography and a doctorate in marine archeology. Unfortunately a depressed economy affected him as it did so many others and he wound up with an oil exploration company and watched as the ocean he loved was slowly destroyed.

The only bright spot in his life comes in the form of a dream, a dream involving a gorgeous man who makes love to him and leaves him breathless in the morning. Even though his dream man is not real the sex always leaves him feeling as though it were. When he is called by his best friend Maggie (Stick) Gabriel to go on an expedition to search for sunken treasure and the ruins of an unknown city he jumps at the chance to finally do what he loves.

Harper will be the Head Archeologist on the expedition and he turns in his papers for a month leave from his job. It doesn’t take long before he realizes that he is doing what he always dreamed of doing and that a month wouldn’t be long enough. He is still visited by his dream man who reveals his name is Pelora. We learn who and what Pelora is and how dangerous it can be to search for buried treasure. I have always had a fear of the ocean because to me it is so vast that it is unknown just what lies beneath and I doubt if anyone will ever really know.

This was a short but very enjoyable story.
