Twenty-four year old Charlene Johnson’s parents were killed in a single car accident, an accident that authorities ruled a suicide. With both parents dead, Charlene is now the sole caretaker for her special needs brother, Joey. With suicide ruling, the insurance money she counted on is no more. With money from her mother’s life insurance, Charlene tries to make ends meet, but to no avail. In spite of quitting school and working, she just can’t handle the bills and the house is going into foreclosure.

Now more than ever, she realizes she must accept the farm that her recently deceased Aunt Jessie left for her in Eden, Kentucky. Her aunt had an apple farm, and with the farm and working she has a better chance of giving Joey the care he deserves. Her only problem are the words her mother always told her, never go to Eden, it is a town filled with secrets and more secrets. With no other choice, Joey and Charlene head to Eden to build a life.

Jethro Carter and his wife Rebekkah have told her that they are her kin, but she has no idea what they mean. Neither of them was ever mentioned by her mom. In Eden she finds a job driving a school bus for special needs children like her brother. The owner of the bus company is a man she met at her parent’s funeral and a man that she is totally attracted to, Zachariah Abingdon. Zack wants Charlene as his mate, only Charlene has no idea what the inhabitants of Eden really are.

Secrets are revealed to Charlene, secrets she could never have imagined. She learns about Joey and the other people in Eden. She learns who her relatives are and why her mother never wanted to return to Eden. Charlene falls in love with Zack, but is she willing to marry him?

The second part of the story revolves around Homeland Security Special Agent Eliana Solomon who is searching for portals that are being used by Jinnis (genies) who come through from a parallel dimension. She must shut the portals down and stop the Jinnis from entering our world, it was the Jinnis who killed Eliana’s mother, and she is determined to bring an end to them. The Jinnis are pure evil and also have a history with Jethro and his pack.

I get the impression that the author is planning more books centering on Eliana and the Jinnis and that this story set the background for what is to come. I hope there will be more, since I did enjoy this story, but there were some unanswered questions which hopefully will be answered in the future. I also look forward to more about Charlene and Zack, they were wonderful characters.
