Ken Brighton, a famous artist, and his adopted six year old daughter, Hanna, and his boyfriend of almost three years, Mark, have just moved to Pleasanton, Michigan.  What should have been a wonderful new beginning for the three turns out to be nothing short of a nightmare.  Very soon after the move Hanna becomes ill and is running high fever. Although Ken is panicking he is convinced it is nothing more than the flu, but that is not the case.

Hanna is diagnosed with Pediatric Leukemia, and Ken spends the next few months in the hospital right by Hanna’s side while she undergoes treatment.  When they finally return home and Hanna is on the road to recovery, Mark breaks the news to Ken that he is leaving, he doesn’t feel that they belong together anymore.  At a time when Ken needs all the support he can get, he is deserted by the man he believed he would one day marry.

But Ken shortly finds all the help he needs in the form of his new neighbor, Patrick Flaherty.  Patrick was a famous singer but two years ago while at a nightclub celebrating his new album, he was shot in the throat.  This incident left him silent, he could no longer sing or talk.  He has been hiding in his parent’s old home creating handcrafted wood furniture.  Patrick is very attracted to his new neighbor, but is convinced that no one would ever love him as a mute.  He is also very fond of Hanna and secretly leaves boxes of gifts on their doorstep for her.  One of the boxes contains all sorts of hats in all kinds of colors making Hanna overjoyed.  Until her baldness is gone, her hats are very important to her.  Patrick seems to always know what she would want.

Ken and Patrick spend time together because Hanna loves to be around Patrick and especially loves his mac-n-cheese.  As much as Patrick is attracted to Ken, he knows there is no room in Ken’s life right now with Hanna ill.  He also doesn’t know whether Ken is still in love with Mark. Can Patrick finally find the love that he has always prayed for?  Will Hanna get well?

This is a story that tugs at your heart strings, it is never easy reading about a child suffering from cancer, but Hanna, in spite of everything, is a bright star.  She accepts her dad is gay and always seems happy no matter what is happening to her.  Ken and Patrick are both men deserving of love, but will they find it?  Although I was hesitant to read this book because of the subject matter the author managed to keep it from being morbid, not an easy thing to do. He injected hope for Hanna, Patrick and Ken.

I don’t see how anyone can read this book and walk away not being touched by it.
