This was one of those books that totally absorbed me from start to finish. I am a very fast reader, but every once in a while a book comes along where I find myself going slow for fear of missing something. This was one of those books.
Amkaya Alvarez lives a very lonely life because being close to someone is deadly. Kaya discovered her true nature when a simple kiss with the boy she had a crush on led to her drinking all his blood. It was her older brother, Arias, who found her and realized that, like him, his sister was half-human and half-vampire. The vampire half was from their father. Arias found that he did not have to kill since he could survive on preserved blood or animal blood. However, Kaya became deathly ill from it and killing was the only way she could survive.
Her sadness over the monster living inside her and the fact that she had to kill and stay away from any relationships only got worse when her younger sister, Cassie, died from a fall down her stairs. Cassie did not inherit vampire blood and so she aged. Even though she died an old woman, her loss was very difficult for Kaya. Kaya’s mother is dead and her father, whom she loved, has been missing since 1891 when he sent his family off hoping to one day join them. That day never came.
Kaya met Noah Elyas Sandman who, like Kaya, kills to survive. Noah is a Nephilim, half-angel and half-human and he lives off the energy emitted when someone dies. He is deadly to any woman he has sex with. Noah and Kaya feel a strong bond with each other and she is more than willing to give up her virginity to the man she is falling in love with, but he is afraid. Kaya is immortal and tired of being alone.
Of course Kaya does die but only for a matter of hours and after hundreds of years, two immortals deadly to those around them can finally have love. Unfortunately, Noah is being pursued by the Watchers, both from Heaven and Hell and that puts Kaya in just as much danger.
Unknown to Kaya and Arias, their father Ramon is being held prisoner by a vampire witch named Violette. There is much more about Violette’s involvement in Ramon’s family that you will find out about when you read the book, I don’t want to give too much away. We also meet Mr. Jack Daniels, an art dealer who wants to display Kaya’s work, but there is much more to his story.
There were so many surprises and secrets. The love between Kaya (Amy is what Noah calls her) and Noah is wonderful as is the story of Arias and their father, Ramon. Ramon lives with his memories and has no idea where his family is and if they are safe. This book was translated into English and it was done so perfectly that if I wasn’t told, I would never have guessed.
I can’t recommend this book highly enough and am thrilled to know that there will be more.
