Jen has finally gone with Sam to Purgatory. She arrived with, Jack who met the same fate as she at the hands of Merry. Merry wanted Jack enough to kill Jen, but in the end she killed them both and wound up dead herself. When Jen is called in to meet with Death, the reapers’ boss, she returns to the waiting area to find Jack missing, and no one is even aware that he ever existed. Now all she has is her link to Sam, and her new job as a reaper.
Sam and Jen have to work together, since she is his apprentice. She finds out she is not exactly reaper material. She has yet to reap a soul and does not follow the rules Sam sets for her. She can’t get over her feelings of sympathy and sadness when she goes to reap a soul, and that is definitely not a good thing. She also can’t stop thinking about Jack and trying to find him. Where is he? Why did he disappear?
Alone and aware she will probably never find Jack, she gives in to Sam’s advances. She realizes she never really hated him, and he gives her comfort and love. Is she over Jack? Does she love Sam, or does he fill an emptiness she has?
While Jen and Sam are off reaping souls, Jack is with Nulcifer (Nul). He suddenly found himself on Nul’s couch with absolutely no memory of anything from his past. The moment he opened his eyes and saw Nul was the first memory he had. He has no idea the ring he wears around his neck belonged to his fiancé Jen, or the girl he dreams about is the woman he loved. He has managed to break some rules, nothing on a person travels into purgatory, and no one in purgatory dreams, but he has a ring and dreams of a beautiful woman. Why has Jack lost his memory? Has someone done something to him?
Sam and Jen face a new problem when souls are not receiving their final death touch. In spite of being dead they are moving and talking. In addition, the reapers sent to reap their souls are missing. Who or what is playing with these dead people, and why? When Sam disappears and Jen is reunited with Jack, things are not how they should be. But then again, so many things are not as they should be. Jen and Sam together, Jack with no memory, and missing reapers. Where is Sam and will Jack get his memory back?
