Mack Kelly is a man of many talents: deputy, former solider, expert coffee drinker and a real suave player with the men. What he’s absolutely not is a person who should be in charge of anything.

Especially an entire town.

When Stallion Ridge is down one sheriff, the absolute last thing Mack wants is to have to fill in Centaur size horseshoes. Wearing the mantle of the man in charge, he now has to not only keep the town in order, but help facilitate the construction of the shiny new railway.

There’s just one tiny problem -- there’s a damn demon sleeping inside where the railway needs to go. Not just a demon, but one made of stone who used to be a god.

With horns.

And a tail.

And a really nice ass.

Of all the books in the series, this is the hardest to review without giving away key information. Maddox manages to give us even more amazing, unique shifters and other characters in this installment of the adventures in Stallion Ridge. All of the favorites are here, of course, but the focus is Mack Kelly. Not only does Mack have to step up and act as sheriff after Cal is injured, but also he gets to face some pretty spectacular issues. The biggest of these is Tahl, god of stone. Their interactions include glowing horns, vibrating crystals, clever tails, and hot coffee. And holy hotness!

This story had the most emotional impact on me. There were great moments of watching Tahl navigate a different world, of Mack learning to have faith in himself, and of the two men being overcome by their own feelings. Even with the roller coaster of emotions, Maddox still manages to give us a HEA that is satisfying and leaves us wondering what can happen next. Every book seems to get better, so I can’t wait to see what happens.
