Miller Sloan may not be an active duty general anymore, but he still has one final mission to complete. If he succeeds, the top secret government research on shifters will remain classified. Failure is not an option. He’s lost too much along the way to give up now. But without a pack, or a mate, or family at his side, his iron will is starting to falter.

Rayne Lowry has always been a free spirit at heart, but never more free than today. After accepting her early retirement package from the FBI, she’s now on an extended vacation to plan the next chapter of her life, and what better place for self-reflection than Sedona, Arizona?

Her plans did not include a chance encounter with a silver fox who is hiding something. Her years as an FBI profiler make his secrets irresistible, but it’s the deep well of regret in his eyes that lure her in. When she’s called to consult on one last case, Miller is a potential suspect, and she’s left wondering if she’s falling in love with the enemy, or have they both finally found sanctuary…

After eight books finally we get General Miller Sloan’s story and I am one happy, satisfied reader.

The General has finally been pushed out of service but not his desire to protect werewolves from being revealed by Senator Hanson. Miller has to find a way to keep the Super Soldier research from being released putting werewolves in danger. It is no secret that people fear what they don’t understand and all werewolves old and young could face mob mentality leading to death or to labs for study.

Never having been in a long-lasting relationship and never really desiring one due to his constant battle to save werewolves and being a werewolf himself Miller could never have expected that a visit to his usual coffee shop would lead to his mate. He saw a woman working on her computer and for some reason she caught his eye and he wanted to get to know her better.

Rayne Lowry is a retired FBI profiler. When she was offered retirement, she jumped at it her mother’s recent death finally made her realize it was time to smell the flowers, life was too short and at forty-five it was time for a fresh start. She chose Sedona to look for her peaceful place and hired Asher’s Wild Sedona Tours to take a try at rock climbing. Asher is the alpha of the Sedona Pack and if you, like me, are a huge fan of this series then you are very familiar with who he is.

Rayne thought that rock climbing would be exciting but had no idea what it would lead to and it would be anything but peaceful. Miller is there to warn Asher about the declassification of the werewolf research and the danger facing him when he once again comes face to face with Rayne. Miller is looking for any ammunition he can use against the Senator and when the Salem alpha, Mathias calls for help finding the person killing and mutilating his wolves and offering Miller leverage against Hanson he jumps at the chance.

Rayne has been offered a position as a consultant to profile a killer leaving human body parts and wolves mutilated and when it appears she and Miller are after the same killer they agree to head to Salem to work together. Miller knows that Rayne is his mate and he is putting her life in danger getting involved in what is going on in the supernatural world which she is unaware of. It is Mathias that lets the cat out of the bag and now Rayne is facing a world totally different from the world she knows and realizing that the man she is interested in is a werewolf.

As the search for a killer, a way to keep the public from discovering that werewolves live among them, facing the fact that he has met his mate and wanting her safe at the same time needing to be near her and a dark magic coven are just a few of the things going on. Secrets are revealed about Miller and Rayne and they have to come to terms with whether they can have a relationship when Miller will always be faced with someone trying to reveal werewolves even if Hanson is stopped.

When I was given this book to read and review, I was thrilled since this series and the author are one of my favorites.
