Fifteen year old Evan Donaldson has lost everything, his parents, his home and a chance for a future. Evan works as a street hustler earning enough to get off the streets, even if for only one night, and to keep from starving. When his parents died in a car accident, everything changed. Then one night he was approached by a stranger, Father Valentin, who seemed to want nothing from Evan but to help him. Having learned the hard way on the streets not to trust anyone Evan is hesitant to believe the Father, but, with no prospects for the future he takes a chance.
Father Valentin takes Evan to St. Bartholomew’s Academy for Boys, and the only payment expected from Evan is the truth, respect for his fellow students and teachers, and to learn. From this day on, Evan’s life is forever changed. His roommate, Clay Mueller, and he become best friends, only Evan wants more than friendship. School is everything Evan could ever have hoped for, he has friends and he is doing well scholastically, with the exception of one of the instructors who knows Evan’s past and makes Evan do the very thing he hoped never to have to do again. He confides in Father Valentin about the abuse, but the priest doesn’t believe him. If not for his friends, especially Clay, he would have run away.
The day of graduation, Evan’s greatest dream is realized when Clay makes love to him. Sure of his love for Clay, and Clay’s love for him, they both set off for college. Evan hopes that if it is meant to be he and Clay will one day be together.
Evan becomes a teacher at a private high school, and he and his friends from St. Bart’s remain close. Clay, on the other hand becomes engaged, and takes a job as a lawyer. Devastated by what Evan believes to be Clay’s betrayal, he goes about trying to find love with someone else. He convinces himself that Clay was never gay and only had sex with him as an experiment. But how can Evan hope to love another man when he can’t get Clay out of his mind and heart?
These are just some of the events that changed Evan’s life. I don’t want to go into any more since it is something you have to read to truly appreciate. This book could be about anyone, male or female, it proves that one day in your life can change everything.
This is a book that brings out every emotion, sadness, happiness, anger and more. When you read it you realize that there must have been so many days in your life that brought about change. Sometimes we don’t see what is right in front of us, but when you read this story you begin to think about those times in your life that changed you. I can’t recommend this book highly enough, it is wonderful.
