This is the second Novella in the By Fire series and it has been several months since Dirk and Lee first met and fell in love.

The Town Council has decided to consolidate the three firehouses down to two, and Dirk and Lee’s is one of two chosen to be closed.  The firehouse is one of the oldest in the town, the state, and the country, and historically should be saved. Of course, politics has a way of messing things up.  The firehouse has a budget that will not allow for the renovations necessary to bring them up to par and, therefore, it falls upon the firefighters to come up with ideas.  How can they raise enough money to redo the kitchen, bathrooms, floors and roof? It will take thousands and thousands of dollars that they don’t presently have.

The only fundraiser they have coming up is their chicken dinner which raises approximately
$5,000, a far cry from what they need.  So Lee comes up with what he thinks can do the trick, a chicken and beefcake sit down dinner for the ladies, with the firefighters serving the meals wearing only their fire pants, helmets and boots.  When everyone agrees to this sit down dinner, Lee once again is surprised by Dirk’s lack of enthusiam. Dirk’s stubbornness comes to the foreground, leaving Lee hurt. Is the chicken and beefcake dinner a success? Will their firehouse stay open? Will Dirk give in and support Lee?

This is a very enjoyable book and it is fun to see how Lee and Dirk are growing together.  We also get to meet some of the guys from Cafe Belgie who are eager to help the firehouse in any way they can.
