Betrayal. It creates rivals.

With the traitor discovered, Jinx Whitethorn takes Jacob Trent back to the home she grew up in. Bringing her shifter boyfriend to a house full of witches is asking for trouble, but Jinx is beyond caring what they think. She needs answers. Answers only they might provide. And they’re willing to endure the hostility to get them.
Surrounded by witch knowledge and magic, Jinx learns more about the curse her father placed on the Bane Pack. But that’s not all. She’s learning to harbor secrets of her own. She can’t keep dodging the Bane Pack, and if she wants to end this, she’ll have to do it alone.
Jacob would never approve of what Jinx is going to do. He can never know. Not until it’s too late to stop her.

The Rival of Species is the third book of Howl for the Damned, a series based in the world of D. Fischer’s Divinus Kingdom. Divinus Kingdom is interconnecting novels that branch one series to the next.

Jinx is still trying to accept the fact that her Aunt Kaya betrayed her and the pack and stole her father’s book. She feels helpless, confused, and betrayed. Jacob suggests that they return to the Lotus Coven and see her mother who might have answers that they need. Shifters and witches are known enemies and Jinx and Sara bringing with them shifters could mean trouble.

Jacob and Cinder are not fans of witches, but they refuse to allow the women they love to go it alone. Jacob is pleasantly surprised by the greeting the High Priestess bestows on them, she is accepting of Jacob and Cinder, but lovingly embraces Sara and Jinx. Jinx’s mom is little help and Sara’s mom is not around. The High Priestess is well aware of the fact that Jinx is a skinwalker, but like Jinx, is still not sure of what her real gifts are. When Jinx and Jacob finally mate the High Priestess is not surprised and is happy that Jinx finally has someone who will always protect her.

Jinx discovers that Sara and she are more than best friends, a connection they never realized they had and one I won’t reveal. While at the coven Jinx and Sara begin to form a plan to finally destroy Wice Bane and the shifters in his pack who are entrenched in evil. She also hopes that she can find her aunt whom she still believes is a victim and save her.

So much happens in this last book of the series, all questions are answered and there are many surprises. Jinx finally learns what she is capable of, taking the form of many different animals and more. She is well aware of how to reunite the shifters of the Bane pack with their wolves. When she is captured. she is given a choice: free the wolves or everyone she loves will die. As with the previous two books there is suspense, romance, secrets, betrayals, and questions, but this time everything is revealed.

I loved this series and strongly recommend beginning with book one or it will be hard to follow what is going on. It is a series filled with amazing characters and a witch with no magic trying to find herself and what she is and finally finding love and acceptance after years of feeling alone.
