You ever read a book that you were not sure you liked but the story was good enough you just kept reading? This book was like that, it was just good enough to keep me interested but just bad enough to not be thrilled with it.
Jo and Caius make a great couple, this book (and maybe the series) is YA and the romance was pretty much a on/off thing that was kind of frustrating but could have been much less frustrating for the reader if the author had not made our heroine so weak.
You get tired of seeing her getting her butt kicked or whining about different things but at the end of the day what you have is a book with a great story potential never comes to pass.
When I finished this book and was (and still am) deciding if I want to give this series any more of my time, I am used to seeing stories where a hero/heroine’s “powers” are late in blooming but this was so bad combined with everything else it was actually pretty depressing I thought and since I read for entertainment a book that is depressing is not my idea of a good time.
Bottom Line: This might end up being a great series, the writing was actually very good, the story development was on the slow side but when you get to the end of a book starting a series you want to feel like you can’t wait for the next one, but our heroine is almost suicidal and I felt like I agreed with her and THAT is how depressing I found this story to be when it could have had a bit more motivation to read the next book other than “Will she keep getting her ass handed to her?” or maybe “Will she finally give up and just kill herself?” (Pretty sure that one is not in the future of the series.)
3 Stars because it took a great story and told it in a mediocre fashion and did not really leave the reader with a lot of motivation to keep reading the series unless you have a bottle of anti-depressants by your side. It could still be a great story but I don’t know if I have the desire to take the chance when I have books I know will be good waiting for me to read them. The thing is the writing is good enough that sadly, you don’t realize how unhappy this book left you until you finish.
