Architect Elliot Graham has bought and restored dozens of historic homes to their original splendor. As in his personal life, he loves them and leaves them, selling them off without looking back. But there’s something about the old plantation house he finds in South Carolina—a connection he can’t explain. He feels as though he recognizes the house, as if within its crumbling walls he might find something he doesn’t even realize he’s lost.

Ben Myers had promised his lover and soul mate, Patrick, that he would wait for his return. Ben has kept his word ever since Patrick left him to wait at the plantation house—during the Civil War. For the first time in many long years, Ben is no longer alone, and he reaches out to Elliot in dreams. Elliot tries to convince Ben that Patrick isn’t coming back, and Ben’s devotion is about to change not only his lonely existence, but Elliot’s life as well.

Elliot Graham has a very successful architectural design business but his true love is finding old houses and restoring them to their period perfection and then selling them for a profit before moving on to the next one.

Elliot has purchased an old plantation house in South Carolina only it is different than most of his finds because this house feels comforting and familiar. Now he is debating whether he will sell this one when the refurbishing is done. His very dear friend Sheri lives nearby and this also gives him an opportunity to see her. He also meets a young man named Daniel who is all over him inspite of Elliot pushing him away but Daniel is insistent and he and Elliot wind up in bed together. It is during that night that Daniel discovered that the house is haunted and the ghost does not want him there. When he warns Elliot, Elliot is unconvinced sure that Daniel had too much to drink or did drugs but soon he will have to admit that Daniel was right.

Elliot begins having dreams about two men from the Civil War, Ben Myers and Patrick Chandler. He is seeing their life through Ben’s eyes, joining the union army, growing up together and finally falling in love. Ben and Patrick are soulmates determined to find each other if they are separated by death. When Elliot wakes after each dream he feels as if he had lived it, it is so real to him. He sees Ben get shot in the stomach and Patrick trying to save him. He sees them in the very house he is now restoring and he sees Ben die is the very bedroom he is now sleeping in. The last thing that Patrick said to Ben when he left him was to wait for him he will return and now hundreds of years later Ben is still waiting.

Little by little Elliot begins to show signs of illness but he is convinced it is just exhaustion from working so hard. He has shadows under his eyes, he is gaining weight and is having shortness of breath but he still believes it is exhaustion until the heart attack hits. He has neglected himself and the months he has had these symtoms turned out to be much more serious than he thought. He has congestive heart failure and it has affected his other organs. It was Ben who saved him when Elliot couldn’t reach his phone. Fortunately for Elliot, Ben had the ability to move objects and moved the phone into his reach.

Elliot and Ben begin conversing with each other in dreams and Elliot begins to fall in love for the first time in his life but with a ghost, a ghost who is waiting for his soulmate to find him. Ben is also able to communicate with the computer, it seems that centuries of watching others taught him quite a bit. Elliot knows that when Patrick finally shows up he will lose Ben but he wants Ben to be happy and is willing to walk away. I will not go any further into the relationship between Elliot, Ben and Patrick but highly recommend you read this book to find out what happens, believe me it is worth it.

Two young men so in love that time would not stop them from finding each other. It is a story of eternal love, a love that we watch through dreams.
