Morgan’s life has never been easy. Her parents died in an accident, she was separated from her sister when they were put into the foster system, and she bounced from foster family to foster family. The last family was so bad, she got tired of the beatings and left for the streets.
She hooked up with Jake, a veteran who lived on the streets, who taught her to fight back, to stay safe while living on the street and was adopted by a mastiff dog she named Lucy. Both Jake’s teaching and Lucy became important because she found herself fighting and banishing demons that walked the streets of Denver.
Morgan was a channel, someone who is picked by the Higher Powers, to fight demons. Her first Dark Angel, her protector, Abrahim, was killed by demons. Morgan blamed herself and was determined not to get too close to anyone else for fear she would cause their death as well.
Until Lucian, an elder Dark Angel was assigned to her. She pushed him away, happier to be alone and Lucian gave her space to learn about him and warm up to the idea of having someone else in her life. But she would find Lucian was more than just a Dark Angel and Morgan felt she was going to lose herself if she followed her emotions that fell hard for him.
But the legend of Riverdale Road and the Kalona takes her attention as demons start following her, calling her by the name Inola, and trying to take her, by any means necessary to the Kalona. By the end of it, it would take the combined power of three Dark Angels and three channels to deal with the darkness that was threatening everyone.
Wow. A.D. Tropser has given the fans of paranormal romance a very interesting look at Cherokee legend, woven together with demon hunters, Dark Angels, and so much more. Morgan is the center of the story and her tragic backstory pulled me in and made me want her to let go and let Lucian in. She fought it all the way. She made me care about Jake and how he was such a great teacher and friend to Morgan. And Lucian. Oh, Lucian. Looking like Thor, big, blond, very nice, and willing to let Morgan come to him rather than stepping in and taking over.
The whole Riverdale Road mythos is echoed in every “dark and spooky road with the woman in white and scary stuff” story told around the country. But this boogie man story has a very darker turn to it. The demonic forces coming for Morgan are scary, especially the Hell Hounds. Jax, the smooth-talking demon is just what you would expect, and the entire second half of the book is a roller-coaster ride as Morgan is pulled to the conclusion.
This is the second book in the Bound series but it was easily read out of order. I am going to go hunt down the first one and the ones in the future will be on my TBR list. I loved Bound By Legend.
