Running for her life…
When a typical day at her cafe in Eagle Rock was interrupted by a young woman desperate to escape her captors, Marnie Kemper gladly intervened. She also gladly agreed to testify against the men involved. Now, days before the start of the trial, her security detail is killed and she’s alone, terrified, and unsure who to trust.
A stunning stranger is her only hope.
Dallas Winston’s Army career ended abruptly when he and his K9 partner were shot during a drug bust. Thankfully, the Guardian Agency gave him a second chance at a meaningful career. When he gets the order to rescue a witness and salvage a high-profile case, he follows procedure and rushes in.
Soon it’s clear that standard tactics won’t be enough to keep Marnie alive. Forced to get creative, Dallas must lower his defenses to earn Marnie’s trust as they navigate a deadly web of corruption.
Dallas saw other doors opening, guests curious about the ruckus amplified by the block walls and concrete walkway. He wasn’t an MP anymore and innocent bystanders weren’t exactly his priority. Still, he shouted for people to stay inside as he launched himself at the gunman.
Their combined weight broke the chain lock and they landed in a heap inside the room.
The gun was kicked aside by a dark shoe, but that was the extent of the details Dallas could collect while he fought the bald man.
They rolled, giving Baldy the advantage. Steely fingers gripped his throat, crushing his windpipe while the man’s bony knees dug into his ribs. Sips of air kept him conscious. With both fists, he struck Baldy at the elbows and sucked in a deep breath as he rolled to the side, gaining an advantage.
He saw the flash of blond hair, assumed it belonged to his assignment as he slammed Baldy’s gleaming head against the door frame. The blow stunned him and he oozed to the floor in a heap.
“Are you Marnie Kemper?” Dallas demanded as he searched the gunman for any identification or additional weapons.
“Yes,” she replied, her voice steady.
“Good. Hamilton sent me.” He found a knife in the man’s belt and tossed it deeper into the room. Removing a small revolver from the man’s ankle holster, he tucked that into his back pocket. “I’m—”
“Step away from him.”
Dallas looked up. Marnie had Baldy’s gun aimed at his chest, center mass, as if she’d been through law enforcement training. “I’m here to help,” he said, keeping his voice low and soothing. Had she been turned? “I’m on your side.”
She had the prettiest eyes he’d ever seen. Even narrowed in suspicion, those eyes were a gorgeous, clear blue, framed by thick lashes and burnished gold eyebrows several shades darker than her hair. He could drown in her gaze, like sliding into a deep glacial lake, and call it bliss.
“Come on,” she demanded, her scowl hard. “Give me ID or something.”
If he reached back, his hand would be too close to the gun. He wouldn’t give her that much reason to fire on him. “You might have noticed I’m not trying to kill you,” he pointed out. “I even stopped that guy from doing so.” He spread his hands out wide and turned slightly. “I’m going to hand you my identification.” Slowly, though everything inside him screamed to get out of here fast, he reached for his wallet and held it out to her.
She snatched it from his fingers, the gun still trained on his heart.
