This book is about two men, Dayton Ingram and Knighton. They are as different as “day and night.” Sorry, couldn’t help myself. The only thing they have in common is being gay and so far into the closet, it would take a map for them to find their way out.
Day transferred from the NSA six months ago to Scorpion Logistics Services hoping that he would finally get some field work. When it is discovered he speaks Spanish, he finally gets his wish. The assignment involved chatter coming from Mexico involving some sort of cyber-attack that could cripple the United States for a long time. He is gung ho for this chance to get into the field until he meets his new partner, Knighton (Knight). Knight has buried himself in booze and Records and Research for two years since the loss of his wife and son.
Knight was an ex-marine. Although he always knew he was attracted to men he did the right thing when his girlfriend became pregnant. He grew to love her and when his son was born, everything in his life was secondary. His pride in being a marine didn’t come close to the pride he had in his child. Although his marriage was not a passionate one, it was loving. The loss of his family almost destroyed him, but this new assignment would be the change his life needed.
Knight and Day are going to Mexico on a gay cruise ship. Two gay men professing their heterosexuality to each other while playing as a couple. On the cruise, both men do their best to push each other’s buttons. Fortunately, even though Knight refers to Day as the “baby agent,” Day does not just sit back and take it. Little by little, they let their defenses down and give into their sexual desire. Knight feels he is betraying his wife and son, and Day realizes he wants out of the closet. For too many years these two men refused to accept who and what they were. Life is too short to spend it alone and unfulfilled.
Arriving in Mexico, the two men have to find and destroy the machine that is set to attack the Internet. They run into unexpected trouble and have to forget everything that transpired between them on the ship and cover each other’s backs. Can they finish their mission successfully? Can they finally accept how they feel about each other?
I loved the main characters and the majority of the book was just about them and their mission. Knight’s loss of his family was heartbreaking. After two long years of grieving, is he finally going to find some source of happiness? There are secrets, suspense, terrorists, and sex. Dirk Greyson is now on my favorite author list. I can’t wait for more about Knight and Day. Well, I hope there will be more.
