Sidney Olivia Stevens is a writer like her mother and grandmother but she is about to learn where her story ideas really come from. Liv believes that she has a muse, a muse that helps her tell her story but in reality her muse is a Nightwalker, a spirit who wants his story told. Her latest book ends with a woman dying in a bathtub but when Liv decides to change the ending it is her life that will change.

Gage approaches Liv at a bar where she hangs out, it is Gage who explains to her what she is and what he is. Liv is a Recorder meaning she can hear the words of the spirit who wants his story told and Gage is a Watcher the one who can actually see the spirit. The killer whose story she is telling wants his ending and not the one Liv wants and he is not going to take no for an answer.

Olivia begins to learn about her family, why her grandmother decided to change her genre and write romances and why her mother stopped writing and commited suicide. Apparently the women in her family are Recorders but her mother couldn’t face what she heard and her grandmother moved out of the family home and fought to write about love not death.

When Gage revealed himself to Olivia it was something unheard of but he has been her Watcher for years and decided he didn’t want to watch from a distance anymore. As with Olivia his family is also all Watchers only as a Watcher they are gifted with the ability to succeed in anything they do. Olivia on the other hand has to deal with Nightwalkers who disturb her sleep and won’t hesitate in doing whatever they have to to get their stories told their way.

If having to deal with Nightwalkers is not enough she also has to deal with a demon who appears once a year. Olivia has always resented her mother for taking her own life and leaving behind her young daughter. Olivia always questions whether her mother took her life because of her and why she wasn’t important enough for her mother to stay with her.

Everything happening to Olivia and her family was the result of actions taken by a distant relative Caroline that caused them to be cursed. We learn about Caroline and her husband Charles’ story but is there a way to break the curse. The Nightwalkers that have been speaking to Olivia unfortunately are killers but not all Nightwalkers who want their stories told are evil.

Gage is determined to stay with Olivia and help her and their relationship changes from Recorder and Watcher to boyfriend and girlfriend even though Olivia tries very hard not to accept that that is what they are. There are surprises and secrets but no blatant sex or violence just an interesting and unique story.
