Caltha Dooran is the toughest, fiercest shape-shifting mermaid in the western seas. She has three Clans to rule, and no time for romance. But when a warlock, Jonty, turns up and asks her to come with him to London to capture a water monster, she can't say no. In London, away from her duties, her attraction for Jonty grows... and they soon fall under each other's spell. But will his past and her responsibilities pull them apart, or can they find the only true magic, the one that binds two souls together?

Caltha Dooran is a shape-shifting mermaid and the leader of the Dooran Clan since the death of her parents. In addition to her responsibility to her own Clan she is now responsible for the two other Clans who can’t work together if their lives depended on it. All she has to worry about is those around her until Jonathan Wakeford (Jonty) a warlock comes calling.

A water monster is causing massive flooding in London and only one person can help and that person is Caltha who would have to leave Dooran Island and put all the Clans in another’s hands. Jonty has seen the monster and all he could get from him was Morwenna (mermaid) Caltha so he came to her for help. With backing from all the Clans and because Jonty is not just a normal human but a warlock they give her permission to go.

The sea monster is so adorable that using the word monster is so unfair. He is an afanc the last of his kind, small with the features of an alligator and the body of a beaver. He is stuck and lost and just wants help and the only one capable of conversing with him is Caltha. She wants to help the afanc and bring him back with her where he will be safe but that is not the intention of the London warlocks.

Jonty has a secret, he has given up his magic because of an incident he blames himself for and as he and Caltha begin to have feelings for each other he finds himself revealing what that secret is convinced she will leave him. There is danger for Jonty, Caltha and that poor little afanc because there are those who want the creature for themselves.

A book filled with mermen, warlocks, witches, hags and a little creature called an afanc, romance and mystery I can’t imagine anything I could want more. Love mermaids, who doesn’t even little kids, love them thanks to Disney.
