A Fortune shouldn’t get you killed. a Promise shouldn’t break your heart.

Attorney Rafe Stanton knows making promises is a dangerous thing. Over and over he has failed to keep people under his protection safe. For years he watched his younger cousin Noah lose his battle with drugs and alcohol, which eventually led to a deadly car accident. When he finds out about Noah’s secret marriage to Logan Tate, Rafe has one last chance for redemption.

Inheriting a fortune should be a blessing, but for Logan life never works out that way. He’s learned the hard way that dreams don’t come true—and if they do, well, there is usually a hefty price tag attached. All he really wants is a quiet life, but that isn’t in the cards when his apartment gets broken into and a pretentious lawyer from Boston arrives thinking he can call the shots.

The two men don’t see eye-to-eye about the inheritance, but with Noah’s powerful family coming after Logan, they find themselves reluctantly on the same side. A gunman, greedy in-laws, and meddling friends are not enough trouble; soon they also need to deal with the explosive chemistry between them.

But Rafe made a promise to the past and Logan doesn’t trust easily, so a future together seems out of reach.

Rafe Stanton is an attorney who always feels a need to fix everything, especially his cousin Noah whose family has never given him love and whose older brother Michael beat on him. Noah turned to drugs and alcohol and Rafe was always on the other end of the phone when Noah needed help. His last phone call with him was Noah begging him to promise not to let his family undo the best thing he ever did and he would see him the next day to explain, unfortunately the next day Noah was dead after his car crashed.

Rafe is having a hard time dealing with Noah’s death but then he discovers secrets Noah has kept from him, he is married to Logan Tate and has left everything he has, which is quite a lot to him. Unable to be both the executor of the estate and Logan’s lawyer he asks his friend Kane to take over. The first thing Rafe does is determine whether or not Logan deserves the money and that he didn’t use Noah while he was under the influence of drugs.

Logan has a past, a stripper, arrested for prostitution and married to Noah not out of love but because Noah owed him, what he owed him for is not something I will reveal. Rafe is drawn to Logan and realizes that Noah was happy when he was with him and that Logan did nothing but expect his college expenses to be paid for and his medical expenses. Discovering that he now is very wealthy is not what he wants and can’t understand why he would give it to him instead of his family, a family that is not going to take it without putting up a fight.

With the family business in trouble Noah’s money is needed to keep it afloat and they are ready, willing and able to do anything necessary to keep Logan from getting it even if it means putting Logan’s life in danger. Rafe is falling for Logan but once again he is trying to fix everything and doing what he promised Noah to make sure Logan gets the money, all of it whether he wants it or not.

This was a wonderful story about three broken men, one dead and the other two hanging on. Logan and Rafe have kept secrets, secrets that could make any chance of a relationship impossible. Rafe needs to stop trying to fix everything and deal in the present, not the past. His promise to Noah is secondary to Logan’s wants and he has to learn to fix himself. The story was filled with amazing characters Logan’s landlord and his niece who protect Logan as if he was family and Rafe and Logan who are trying to bury their pasts. A story about locking away mistakes and starting over.
