But everybody noticed handsome, athletic, and ultrapopular jock Clay Northrup.

They had nothing in common and lived in different worlds.

But a lot can change in fifteen years, and when they meet again at their high school reunion, Clay is no longer the big man on campus, and Kevin isn’t hiding in a corner anymore.

This was a very short story but none the less it made a statement about what happens to us after high school. Kevin Howard was the high school nerd who came out as gay inspite of the torment he would receive. Clay Northrup was the high school jock, he was everything every boy wanted to be and every girl wanted.

It is now the ten year reunion and when Kevin sees his high school crush Clay he still remembers his feelings for him, feelings that never would see the light of day. Clay now runs his father’s dealership was married and has a son. Kevin owns karate studios in San Francisco, LA, and New York with his headquarters here in Michigan where it all began.

Of course there were still guys who loved using the word “fag” when they approached Kevin but over the years Kevin had heard it all. It wasn’t until Clay revealed his sexual preference something he was to afraid to admit in high school and which caused his marriage to end that Kevin was taken back to what could have been. Now an adult he finally is able to accept the real him and isn’t embarrassed to say so.

Ten years has brought about huge changes all of us face, the dreams of what we expected our lives to be and realization that it will never happen. Time to face who we really are and facing the world with our head up. I did get a kick out of one thing Kevin said when he was accused of turning Clay gay, he said “it would take three pink drinks and an episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race before you turn gay” I really got a kick out of that.

What happens to Kevin and Clay after all these years I won’t reveal but this is a story with a lesson we should all accept ourselves for what we are and not put on masks to hide ourselves.
