By all appearances, Nicki Reading is a star. PR director at a major music label, Nicki is sharp, successful, independent, and confidently calls the shots. She dates whom she wants, when she wants, with no strings attached. But beneath that shine, loneliness flickers. Events from her past prove love leads only to pain. Commitment is not an option.

Until Dex Hanover, a classy, principled, and prosperous CPA, enters the picture. Undeterred by his unhappy childhood, he has an amazing capacity to be both caring and generous, giving his free time as a mentor for a child from the projects. Dex wears his paternal yearnings on his sleeve, and he is at a point in his life where commitment is the only option.

Despite their opposing views, Nicki and Dex ignite each other. But will events from their pasts ruin their challenging relationship and prevent them from experiencing everlasting love?

Nicki Reading is a very self-sufficient, independent woman who doesn’t believe in long term relationships, marriage or children. Now she is on a cruise with her latest boyfriend of almost three months and realizes he is not a keeper.

Dex Hanover is a CPA and a forensic accountant on the same cruise as Nicki and with a girl who he has recently broken up with but since they had the trip paid for they went along with each other. It was at the bar that Dex and Nicki first set eyes on each other and it was an instant “Wow”.

Since Nicki’s boyfriend was into the craps table instead of her and Dex’s ex-girlfriend was doing her own thing that left time for Nicki and Dex to meet as often as possible. When the cruise ship docked both Nicki and Dex were free to see whoever they wanted and they wanted to see each other. Fortunately they both worked and lived in Philadelphia making getting together easy.

Nicki lost her father and for all intent and purposes her mother at the same time. Her mother fell into a depression due to the lose of his husband and died young leaving Nicki convinced that falling in love would just lead to pain. Dex had a difficult childhood when his father walked out on him,his sister and mother and is determined to never be like him. He wants a wife and children and he wants Nicki who does not want the same things. She wants Dex and wants to marry him but he wants children something she is unwilling to agree to.

It is Nicki’s three best friends from high school who call themselves the Sworn Sisters that are always there for her when she needs emotional support and she needs it because of Dex and his determination to have children. Something I won’t discuss in this review happened to Nicki to turn her off children, all children and especially having her own.

This book is full of emotions and Dex and Nicki are wonderful characters as well as her Sworn Sisters who have problems of their own. There was romance, sex and a surprise I never saw coming. Can Nicki and Dex overcome their differences or will they end their relationship in spite of the deep love they have for each other, this is something you will have to find out for yourself and I definitely think this book will be a great choice for anyone who loves contemporary romance.
