Honey packs everything she owns and heads to NYC to jumpstart her art career. Her cheating boyfriend is history, and she finally acknowledges the truth of her mother's mantra: Careers are forever and happily ever after isn't in their DNA.

All she needs is a job and a place to live. What she doesn't need is a taciturn, sexy, ballbuster but she's woman enough to know the difference between need and want. Isn't she?

Jake's childhood was marred by tragedy and his future hijacked to a promise born of guilt. His failure drove him to a career as a SEAL and a security expert.
But it's not enough. Now he'll give up his freedom in reparation for the life he lost. Honey may be the last sweet stop on the road to a joyless future. If it's what they both want, where's the harm in a no-strings affair?

If Honey Hill didn’t have bad luck she would have no luck at all, first she agreed to share an apartment with a man she knew nothing about and who then proceeded to get drunk and try to attack her, fortunately he was so drunk that a well placed kick to his family jewels changed his mind. Second, her friend Lizzie got the flu and had to give up her spot at the Hotel Pierre serving at a wedding for a tycoon named Vlad Grigory so rather than give it up she offered the job to Honey who discovered her former roommate took all her belongings including her wallet with ID and money.

A confrontation at the wedding between Honey and another waiter brought her to the attention of the Chief of Security, Jake Ricco who knew she didn’t belong since he vetted all the employees himself. Jake owns his own security company and no one is going to interfere in his friend’s wedding. Thrown out with nowhere to sleep, no ID or money and an internship interview the next day Honey is desperate and returns to the hotel to retrieve her backpack which is all she has left to her name. Two days in New York and already everything has gone wrong.

After retrieving her backpack she manages to sneak into an empty room to take a shower and when she comes out wearing only a towel she finds herself once again face to face with Jake Ricco whose room she was using, how could she be so unlucky. Seeing her sets Jake’s heart racing, there is something about this little woman with lavender hair and a take no prisoner’s attitude so he can’t help it when his protective instinct kicks in and he offers her the opportunity to spend the night, no strings attached.

After going for coffee Jake comes back to find her gone and he can’t help but investigate who she really is and find her but with no luck until he goes to his favorite bar to watch football and working behind the bar is none other than Honey the woman he can’t seem to get out of his mind. Honey is so different from any other girl that he has ever been with and once again he offers her help by renting her one of the apartments in his penthouse, an offer Honey can’t turn down.

Jake and Honey both have had difficult childhoods but with a genius IQ Honey got a free ride to college where she studied ceramic art, her dream to intern at a gallery or museum and with Jake’s help with her living arrangements her dream seems to be a reality at long last. It doesn’t take long before the two of them decide that although they have a limited time with each other they would make the most of their time together and more and more her time is spent with him in his bed.

Jake made a promise to his mother to return to Italy and marry a woman of her choosing, a woman with money that would bring his mother back to the life she once enjoyed. With the death of his brother at the age of thirteen his mother guilted him into taking his brother’s place and his hope is that the nightmares he has suffered from for twenty years will end if he does so.

I loved this book, two people who were convinced that they could live together, love together and then just leave each other find that the heart is not just an organ but it is a living thing that wants what it wants. Whether there is a HEA for Jake and Honey is up to you to find out and you will not be sorry you decided to do just that.
